In a privileged speech delivered at the House of Representatives on September 2, 2025, Leyte 4th District Representative Richard Gomez issued a public apology to members of the media. The apology came after a social media post in which he alleged a “media spin” on a story about him.
"To the members of the press who took offense at my social media post, I sincerely apologize," Gomez said. The congressman's post was made in response to reporters seeking his comment on accusations from Matag-ob, Leyte Mayor Bernie Tacoy regarding a damaged flood control project.
Gomez acknowledged his mishandling of the situation, stating, “Sensitive information has since been removed. I understand that the media endeavored to get my side of the story. I acknowledge your efforts. I am sorry and I could have handled it better.”
The original post, which has since been edited, included screenshots that revealed the names and contact numbers of the reporters.
The National Union of Journalists had previously criticized the congressman's remarks, citing a potential data privacy violation and the risk of harassment and fraudulent activities the post could pose to the press.
